학부생들은 보통 엑셀만 다루는 경우가 많지만, 대학원에서는 고급 그래프와 통계처리가 필요하므로 다양한 프로그램이 필요합니다. 이공계 대학원생으로서 가장 기본적으로 사용하는 자료처리 프로그램은 SigmaPlot이나 OriginPro입니다.
두 프로그램 모두 기본 통계 기능이 있으며 최근에는 주성분분석 기능까지 포함되어 있습니다. 초보 학생이 사용하기에는 SigmaPlot이 더 쉽고, OriginPro는 고급 기능이 많이 있어서 박사과정 학생이 사용하기 적당합니다. 저는 석사과정부터 SigmaPlot을 사용했고, 박사과정과 포닥 중에는 OriginPro도 사용했습니다. OriginPro를 이용해서 기체/입자 분배 자료 처리 등을 했습니다. 예전에는 두 프로그램이 별로 차이가 나지 않았던 것 같은데, 시간이 지날수록 OriginPro에 다양한 고급기능이 훨씬 많이 추가되고, 유저 커뮤니티가 활성화 되어 있고, 다양한 어플이 개발되고 거의 매년 1-2회 업데이트 버전이 나오고 있습니다. 반면에 SigmaPlot은 정체되어 있다는 느낌입니다. 몇 년에 한 번씩 버전 업데이트가 되고 있고, 기능 차원에서도 점점 OriginPro에 밀리는 듯 합니다. 현재, UNIST에서는 OriginPro 2020 버전을 사이트 라이센스 형태로 제공하므로, 꼭 배우기 바랍니다.
